Black Coral
The Hawai`i State Gem, Black Coral is an extremely rare deep water coral, one of the few natural resources we do have here in Hawai`i. Coral harvesting is typically an ecological nightmare, but not in this case. At depths between 150-500ft black coral grows far below delicate reef ecosystems.
In state waters (within 3 miles of shore) divers can only cut coral with a base wider than 3/4inch. Trees with this base size are typically about 36 inches tall.
